Nails and Hands on the Day: Which Colour and When to Do Them

In event photos, hands show up far more than people expect: holding a glass, resting in your lap, in group shots, and at an engagement there are ring photos specifically. Preparing them is worth the small amount of time it takes.

When to have them done

One to two days before is the sweet spot. The same day is risky, since polish may not be fully hardened and dents easily. More than three days out and regrowth starts showing at the base, especially with dark colours.

Gel is far more forgiving — done a week ahead it still looks tidy. With regular polish, allow at least an hour of drying before you do anything else with your hands.

Colours that photograph well

Cameras and flash shift nail colour more than you would think. The most reliable choices are nudes, soft pinks and a classic red, because all three read as themselves under any lighting.

• Lovely but demanding: very dark shades like black or oxblood make hands look smaller and draw attention
• Risky on camera: neons and bright greens, which often shift under flash
• Best for short nails: nudes and soft pinks, which lengthen the fingers

With short nails and no extensions, choose something close to your skin tone so the line of the finger reads as continuous and longer. Dark polish on short nails visibly shortens the hand.

Coordinating with the dress and your lip

Nails do not need to match the dress exactly — an exact match usually looks laboured. A better guideline is to keep nails in the same family as your lip, so cool with cool and warm with warm.

If the dress is detailed or a strong colour, keep nails quiet. Your hands sit against the dress in most photos, and two competing focal points look cluttered.

Hands, not just nails

Dry skin shows clearly in close-up photos, particularly across the knuckles. Use hand cream nightly through the week before, and carry a small tube — frequent hand-washing at an event dries them out quickly.

The commonly forgotten spot is elbows, which are always in frame in a sleeveless dress. Include them in the final week.

Take care getting dressed

Fresh polish and long extensions catch on fabric very easily, especially lace and mesh. Push with your palms rather than fingertips when putting a dress on. With a rented piece this matters more, since pulls in lace are difficult to repair.
