The short version

Why white is the one real rule
The bride wears white. Wearing it too muddles the group photos and can read as competing for attention even when that was never the intent.
The common mistake is near-white: cream, ivory, pale champagne, blush lace. Under event lighting and camera flash these all photograph as white. If you love a dress in that family, pick one with a clear pattern or contrast detail.
Black — the genuinely contested one
Thai tradition associates black with funerals, and many older relatives still feel that way. In practice, evening weddings in Bangkok are full of guests in black and nobody minds.
Black works when
- The reception is evening, at a hotel or rooftop venue
- The invitation says cocktail or black tie
- Most guests are the couple’s own generation
Skip black when
- It is a Thai morning ceremony with merit-making rituals
- Family elders make up most of the guest list
- The wedding is in a province where tradition is observed closely
Red and bright colors
Red is auspicious at Chinese weddings, where guests are sometimes asked to wear it. At a traditional Thai morning ceremony, bright red can be too loud. Softer versions — burgundy, brick, rosewood — carry the color without the volume.
When in doubt, ask
The most effective move is also the most overlooked: ask the couple whether there is a color theme. It is not rude, and most couples are glad to answer because they want the photos to look cohesive.
